MONSUNE 1998

We recently introduced your ears to the sweet sounds of bedroom producer Monsune with comeback single ‘Outta My Mind’, and today the Chinese-Canadian talent Scott Zhang has released his debut EP. Tradition EP is the soundtrack to Monsune’s coming-of-age, as he shares: “The EP is loosely based on the emotional chaos I've been through while transitioning from adolescence to adulthood. It covers some of my experiences with uncertainty, infatuation, diaspora, and a lot of other new feelings I've come across throughout this transition.” We're pulling focus onto EP opener 1998’, which we assume is Zhang’s birth year. As with all his music, the track is a sauntering journey through eclectic samples from golden-era disco to classic soul to more contemporary moments. The production doesn’t miss a beat, retaining the samples' retro warmth while giving each layered section a life of its own. We especially love to use of lofi recording and woozy guitars which gives the track a nostalgic daydreamy atmosphere as Monsune signals farewell to his adolescence. Be sure to check out the whole EP for a stellar listening experience. - Hannah Thacker
