Diving into a trip-hop/pop labyrinth this week is LA-based artist Molly Moore. A quite serious detachment from her previous material, new single ‘Free Spirit’ shows Moore in an intriguing new light. Working with rising artist (and boyfriend) Brandyn Burnette, along with Massive Attack-affiliated producer Craig Dodds, has seen her develop and alter her sound quite drastically. A hugely encouraging step-up, new single 'Free Spirit’ doesn’t give the listener a moment's breath. The verses are carried by electronically-textured big beat drums, with Moore’s delectably off-kilter harmonies shuffling in and out of the stuttering rhythm patterns. “I’m a free spirit / I won’t give it up” she cries in the unsettling chorus - and by the sounds of things Molly Moore does feel free. Free to experiment. Free to challenge the norm. Free to confidently work outside the boundaries of contemporary pop music. All we can say is, freedom in this case has taken Molly Moore to a whole new level, and we can’t wait to hear what’s next. -JC
