LIST PICK

MIYA FOLICK DEADBODY

Ever-rising Californian artist Miya Folick channels the rapturous power of ‘70s legends like Joni Mitchell and Stevie Nicks in new single ‘Deadbody’, which sounds like a cult anthem from that first epic drum hit before Folick launches into those warlike vocal shouts. “Over my dead body,” calls the musician with impressive vocal strength, and it’s backed with a marchlike drum pattern, winding electric guitars and a moody bassline that would be right at home on a Fleetwood Mac record. Miya Folick has been open about these retro influences, possibly finding more in common with a time a protest, rather than today’s algorithm pleasing culture. From her own perspective, Miya Folick tells us that “I wrote Deadbody after reading article after article about people’s exploitation by people and power structures, and then talking to my friends about our own heavy experiences. I felt defeated by the weight and pervasiveness of the system we are fighting. I needed something to sing that felt hopeful but fierce. I wanted to growl and be demanding and defiant. Deadbody was meant for me and you to sing together, to make us feel empowered, strong, and exhilarated by our own resilience.” Be sure to check out our interview with Miya Folick, as well as previous List Picks ‘Woodstock’ and ‘Trouble Adjusting’. - Hannah Thacker
