New Zealand alt-rock three-piece Mermaidens have announced signing to legendary kiwi label Flying Nun with the news of their debut album Perfect Body, which arrives on the 4th of August. Consisting of Gussie Larkin (guitar/vocals) Lily West (bass/vocals) and Abe Hollingsworth on percussion, Mermaidens make challenging and angular indie rock, which walks the line between post-punk and psychedelia. Citing bands like Warpaint, Fugazi, Exploded View and Sleater-Kinney as inspirations, it's no wonder Mermaidens' sound is difficult to pin down exactly. Their influences shine through on new single 'Satsuma' as tribal drums pave the way for Larkin and West's winding vocals. The Warpaint reference becomes clear when Hollingsworth takes the bass drum four to the floor as West's Jenny Lee Lindberg-esque groovy bass line takes centre stage.
