MARNA PURE GOLD

Last year, Marna was a DIY musician making rough, uncompromising recordings in her ninth-floor London flat, until she heard one of producer JKP’s songs and sent him some of those hidden demos. What occurred after that was a meeting of creative minds, two artists wishing to explore darker realms of emotional turmoil and electronic beatmaking. It’s only been a few months since we heard Marna’s ‘Crossfire’, but the talented songwriter, musician and vocalist is back with ‘Pure Gold’, once again backed by a JKP production. The pair have opted for a lighter feel in terms of instrumentation and production; there’s underwater recordings, the sound of rain on windows, reverberated lullaby keys, softly played strings and ethereal vocal effects. Throughout ‘Pure Gold’, the emotional weight lies heavy, something of a hallmark for Marna whose melancholic reflections of love and loss are portrayed majestically. - HT
