MALIK YELLOW

Malik continues to colour in the Spectrum series with ‘Yellow’, a lo-fi, dreamily-textured song packed with internal musings and finished with a stylish production. It seems that in line with previous releases like the romantic ‘Pink’, confessional ‘Red’ and fired-up ‘Orange’, this new single is further completing a map of the Austinite’s emotional and cognitive range at present. ‘Yellow’ is a song of searching, of guesstimates and that unsettled feeling that’s presented through Malik’s electronically-tinged lyrics that weave their way through jazzy keys and lethargic beats. The refrain that we’re constantly brought back to, “this ‘ain't a love song for you, this is for me, so I can learn to breathe. I began to freeze, until the sun came out again,” suggests that the inspiration for ‘Yellow’ could have come from the same source as ‘Red’ - a difficult, suffocating relationship. As Malik proceeds to mull over recent life events, we look forward the next colour. - HT
