At the opening of Mae Muller’s new single ‘Pull Up’, we were tempted to pull an eye roll and think to ourselves, “oh, another over-polished pop song,” but something about this one kept us listening. The acoustic guitar and electronic overlay sounds like the love child of Jessie Reyes and Dua Lipa (oh yes pop fans, we went there.) With this radio-ready backing, Muller could have sung any collection of words with success, although as we continue to listen, it becomes apparent that this isn’t the case. Instead Mae Muller captures the sense of bitterness and loss that surrounds a break-up through her rhythmic vocals and picture-perfect lyrics like “boy you better pull up, pull up, / I know you’re trying to pull the trigger on our love.” The video is a direct reflection of ‘Pull Up’, starring Muller alongside eye candy love interest. These visuals flip between loved-up scenes and embittered disputes, and as Muller explains “The idea behind the video was to show the comparison between when a relationship was once sweet, to sour.
