MAE MULLER JENNY

The message of female empowerment, unity and above all equality for everyone has already been catapulted into 2018 with the blazing fire of Oprah Winfrey’s words and the Black Dress Protest at the Golden Globe Awards. For the most part, progress is serious business - here’s where young London artist Mae Muller steps in with her second track release ‘Jenny’. In a way, it’s a break-up song, but without any relation to tears, or anger, or thirst for revenge. It’s a subtle and cheeky middle finger to fuckbois through her refreshing ‘90s-influenced R&B and minimalist pop style, excelled by production from Two Inch Punch. ‘Jenny’ is a conscious effort to change the discourse surrounding players, as Muller explains: “There are so many songs that are about break-ups which are sad and negative, so I just wanted to turn it on it on its head and make it playful and fun. It's a song that you can sing at the top of your lungs, and make you feel a bit better if you've been done dirty. It's about girls sticking together and realising that we don't need men that aren't gonna treat us right, boy BYE!” Following up on ‘The Hoodie Song’, another playful pop listen revelling in female sexuality, ‘Jenny’ will also feature on Mae Muller’s upcoming debut EP, After Hours, to be released on February 6th. - HT
