LUKE MARZEC ALONE IN THE CITY

As a wider society, we often decry the ever-encroaching presence of technology on our everyday lives, and yet there’s so many liberating possibilities to be found there too. Take the Polish-British newcomer Luke Marzec, who was able to find his musical voice by experimenting with equipment and DAWs. He didn’t have to attend an elite music college, buy the finest equipment and pass grades. “I was instantly inspired and motivated by my ability to surprise myself with nice sounds and recordings,” says the young Londoner. Marzec goes on to recall: “I neither knew how to work the equipment properly or how to produce, and I didn't have any expectations about what I would be making. I tried things out and chanced upon moments. When I captured something raw and beautiful, I would then craft these musical accidents into a piece of music, finding interesting ways to work the samples.” The result of these attempts - by a guy who was managing a pizza place in South London at the time - is the divine ‘Alone In The City’. Through this electronic production with its traces of soul and jazz, Marzec is able to capture the isolating, cold and equally dehumanising and humbling experience of living in a gargantuan city such as London. ‘Alone In The City’ is the final track to be shared from Luke Marzec’s Chances EP, out in full on April 27th. - Hannah Thacker
