LOW FEM J—

For any loyal readers of TMR, you may remember our introduction to Brooklyn’s pop-curious duo low fem (aka Max Silver and Lucas Segall) who burst forth with standout single ‘I Will Be There’. At the time, that econo-disco debut featured on an EP called S/ZEMYA, which has since been removed from their SoundCloud and replaced with the double-sided single City Life!. Reminiscent of The National’s Trouble Will Find Me and Douglas Dare, low fem’s ‘J—’ is punctuated with bitter disdain of isolation, longing and perpetual disappointment. As with ‘I Will Be There’, the song is directed at this selfish other, namely ‘John’ as we can see from the song’s URL. Whether the experience is imagined or real, there’s no denying the convincing demonstration of emotion with that uniquely tonal voice. As for the instrumentation, it’s largely minimalist electronica, like a stripped-back Tears For Fears, although prefers to rest in moments of sparkling chimes and cinematic, late-night guitar riffs. Of course, what drives the whole track is that pulsating rhythm, a play between retro synths and steady drum pads. It’s another excellent output from the little known low fem. - HT
