LOOSE BUTTONS STRANGERS IN A NIGHTCLUB

Listening to ‘Strangers In A Nightclub’ might have you thinking that Loose Buttons hails from the Arctic Monkeys’ very own Sheffield, or at least nearby Leeds or Hull. However, it may come as a surprise that these lads aren’t even British, they in fact live in New York City and have adopted the ‘00s indie-rock sounds as their own. Even the subject matter isn’t a far departure from what we’d expect of a UK indie band; this time being the disconnection and endless possibilities of a night on the tiles. As the band say, much of their music centers around “the troublesome blessing of growing up in NYC.” Through the lyrics of ‘Strangers In A Nightclub’, a vivid image of a darkened dancefloor’s inhabitants comes to life, whether that’s the talker who “dabbled in Gothic erotica” or the chancer “sporting a redcoat” with “pomade in his hair.” The slanting rhythms give a disillusioned, perhaps intoxicated, atmosphere to the song which rides on lines reverby guitar refrains. The chorus is particularly catchy and wonderfully romantic. - Hannah Thacker
