If you missed out on the listening pleasure that was Joywave’s debut album How Do You Feel Now?, then you’re in for a real treat today as the Rochester band unveil a second song from their next record. ‘It’s A Trip!’ lives up to it’s name with layers of hopping funk rhythms leading into a wild, heavy-hitting chorus - brief and full of energy. The song continues to swing between these polar states of laid-back grooves and unleashed fury, led by conversational lyrics. The backing vocals are held in falsetto speaking out questions and accusatory statements - “you don’t know what you want” - while Daniel Armbruster’s slick voice replies, “yeah, I’m thinking it over.” As the track progresses, things slip into hallucinatory dysfunction, a menacing voice repeating “this is a trip,” before the band switch the control back on for a catchy outro. Following on from album title-track ‘Content’, this five piece made up of Armbruster, Joseph Morinelli (guitar), Sean Donnelly (bass), Benjamin Bailey (keyboards) and Paul Brenner (drums), prove that they’re a well-oiled unit, unafraid of experimentation, and yet totally confident in their sound.
