The West London breakthrough Jelani Blackman is back following the acclaimed success of last year's debut EP, which itself featured his very first release of any kind 'Twenty//Three'. Back then (by which we mean 2014), Blackman was no doubt ambitious, but he was under prepared for the amount of attention that his left-field, R&B style would be sending his way. With much less of a break, the distinctive talent is back with 'Not You'. A bassy, dance track with Africana rhythms and a tapestry of electronic beats. Of course, the thing we can't escape is the London artist's growling baritone, which at times lifts to an R&B croon, but also dips to darker verses. For a guy who didn't really have a plan three years ago, Jelani Blackman continues to polish up his growing repertoire. - HT
