With their debut European tour under way, Japanese Breakfast have shared a live session version of 'Heft'. It is a highlight from their acclaimed Psychopomp album (out now on Dead Oceans/Yellow K) and shows-off the subtly catching but deeply reflective style of lo-fi rock being created by the Michelle Zauner-lead project. Of the track Zauner explains, "The first half was written right before we found out my Mom had cancer, and the second half was written after she passed away, reflecting on what a painful process it was to try to manage disease and treatment." A weighty subject delivered with power and an underlying melancholy that is making Japanese Breakfast one of the most potent indie breakthrough act of the year. -G.O'B
