JAPANESE BREAKFAST BOYISH

Philadelphian songwriter Michelle Zauner pka Japanese Breakfast's second single from her simply-titled sophomore album Soft Sounds From Another Planet is a transformation of an old demo from Zauner's self-appointed song-a-day project back in 2014. With band mate and co-producer of the album Craig Hendrix in tow, the pair made a conscious effort to elevate 'Boyish' from its humble roots, to a romantic masterpiece with all the trimmings. Zauner explains, “Craig and I wanted to produce this sort of grandiose Roy Orbison-esque ballad...We wanted the chorus to have big arrangements, lots of harmonies and synth strings, to create a really sweeping, melancholic effect that mirrored the nature of the lyrics." The desired effect is executed perfectly, resulting in something that sounds like a dreamier version Angel Olsen, steeped in whimsical nostalgia. Soft Sounds From Another Planet arrives on the 14th of July via Dead Oceans. -HLMX
