INSPIRED AND THE SLEEP

Straight from California’s rapidly expanding music scene steps forward Inspired and the Sleep, the front of singer-songwriter Max Greenhalgh and multi-instrumentalist Bryce Outcault, with a track designed for getting you through the rough spots, as the title so handily suggests. A delightful piano and the sound of Greenhalgh clearing his throat opens the song before we’re advised that there’s “nothing to be said” if it’s a result of negative thinking. This insatiably fun tune then progresses into a marching beat, interspersed with ‘80s-style sample pad flourishes. The pair consistently reminds the listener to keep moving forward, both physically with this walk-pace rhythm, and mentally, with their notes on that stereotypical West Coast positive mental attitude. If we had to pick a choice cut from ‘Getting Through’, it would be the anthemic indie-rock choruses that showcase a change in mood as a sense of insecurity peeks through in lines like “and you can stay in the shadows / dad I'm trying my best, but it just don't matter to you / no chance of getting through.” - HT
