LIST PICK

HôY LA ROSES

Danish singer and producer Ingri Høyland - aka Hôy la - has made a couple of appearances before here at TMR; taking our attention with her distinctly haunting and powerful alternative tracks ‘Please’ and ‘Purple’. Little did we know that these songs were part of a greater plan, her X Heads EP. It’s a concept of sharp minimalistic and Nordic expression, that has you peeking behind the curtain of electronica into the more abstract, experimental world that Hôy la inhabits. Speaking on the release, Høyland states that “X Heads represents my most tremendous terrors and desires. It’s quite difficult to explain, but all the different songs play with unique experiences and woolgathering". From the EP, we’re highlighting track ‘Roses’, a sultry, slinking number that’s composed with simple effectiveness. She convincingly croons 'I walk endlessly', and through the smooth flow of trembling bass, raw percussion, and ethereal vocal samples, the listener can truly believe that this secret garden stroll will go on forever. There’s little else like the infinite illusion created by Hôy la’s melting pot of electronica, trip-hop and rock, and it’s one you can experience for yourself at SPOT Festival on the 2nd to 4th of May. - Hannah Thacker   Photo credit: Petra Kleis
