HAZEL ENGLISH MORE LIKE YOU

Through a haze of lo-fi guitars, easygoing drums and dreamy vocals, Oakland-based Australian artist Hazel English expresses life’s anxieties. Her debut EP, Never Going Home, dealt with the intense feeling of traveling over a thousand miles away from her home, family and friends to pursue a music career. Now, English uses her indie-pop tool kit to compare and measure herself against others in new single ‘More Like You’. However, the repeated question “do you want me to aspire to, to be all that you admire?” suggests that this isn't an inner uncertainty, but a pressure from the outside world. The vagueness of this critical 'other' means that the listener can apply their own experience to Hazel English's melodic narrative. Whether it's a romantic partner, friend, parent, boss, teacher, or even fans and followers for the more publicly-placed reader, the languid notes of ‘More Like You’ won't set you off worrying about your own situation, or even that of the chanteuse, because Hazel has the remedy to hand - let it go. - HT
