LIST PICK

HALLS FACE TO FACE

‘Face To Face’ marks the second installment of Halls’ Infinite Loss album, from which we’ve already featured stand-out singles ‘The Gift’ and ‘Hallelujah’. Part II starts with ‘∞ Life’, an instrumental track built from chopped gospel service samples and sweeping piano, before running into ‘Face to Face’, the next single taken from the LP, and our latest List Pick from the British producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sam Howard. Speaking about the single, he shares that “Face to Face was one of the first songs I wrote for the new album, and is about facing up to those awful feelings you experience after the shock of death. ” Once again, Howard presents a gripping composition of barefaced piano and melodic electronica. Not only does the instrumentation wrap the listener in a wealth of complex emotion as mirrored in the woven beats and samples, but so do the lyrics, as we learn from the musician himself. As he says, “Although it’s got some pretty sad lyrics in it, it’s a hopeful song - “I’m not gonna stop” and “now I’m starting a new life, new hope” are ultimately looking to the future, away from the grief.” Perhaps with this final cathartic release, Halls can move forward beyond Infinite Loss, and in doing so help others who’ve dealt with grief. If you’re around London on December  2nd then be sure to save space in your calendar for Halls’ show at The Victoria in Dalston. - Hannah Thacker
