GRADY MODEL STUDENT

Following from previous single ‘Easier To Say’, Grady taps into the blameless teen mentality in new single ‘Model Student’. The Santa Barbara musician really does have a penchant for creative lyrics that are equal parts witty, sarcastic and relatable. His music is reminiscent of fellow indie troubadours Whetan, Rex Orange County and Gabriel Black, and it’s a sound ultimately attuned to the American youth in their search for identity. In ‘Model Student’, Grady embraces his inability to fit into a box back in school, and how a lack of parental support or financial stability has given him a sense of wisdom before his time. For example, in the final speak-sing verse, Grady points to the rich kids to say “‘Cause it’s easy to be all that / If college didn’t work out / they had a fall back,” while referring back to his own disparate experience: “Me, I was born with my middle finger up / Holes in my clothe, / And my sense of normal fucked.” ‘Model Student’ is a left-of-pop soundtrack to growing up as an automatic outcast. - Hannah Thacker
