FUFANU TYPICAL CRITICAL

Last year Fufanu emerged as Iceland’s most promising new band with their second album Sports, and this year, this trio is determined to retain that title by releasing a string of EPs that explore various genres and styles, from motorik post-punk, to alt-techno, to woozy avant-garde electronica. ‘Typical Critical’ is the lead single from the second instalment of this series, Dialogue II, out on August 24th. This glassy, oscillating, metallic piece of obscure electronica explores the concept of real life love versus online love - as lyricist Kaktus Einarsson explains: “How we not only want to be loved and adored, but we want to feel it as well. You want something more than to see it only through social media likes and emoji’s that someone loves you – you want to actually feel it. Feel a more complex love from what the world feeds on. Handmade love vs. mass-produced love.” The mesmerising track is matched equally by the hypnotic music video of a juggler with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth and a jaded stare. As Kaktus recalls "I stumbled up on this guy on YouTube doing juggle tricks in a studio with a tripod camera. He was so mesmerising doing the tricks; I just wanted to capture him as a person—this focused and serious, but careless and lonely person. I managed to contact him but he said he had retired. I somehow managed to convince him to take part, so we went to a studio and asked him to do a routine and filmed him—so amazing." - Hannah Thacker
