EMPRESS OF TRUST ME BABY

Back in 2015, Los Angeles artist Lorey Rodriguez released her debut album, Me, under the name Empress Of. The record is crammed full of left-field electronic pop gems that Rodriguez wrote, performed, produced, recorded, and engineered, and of which we favoured songs ‘Kitty Kat’ and ‘Water Water’. Following on from this, the now New York based musical polymath worked a range of alternative producers like Darkstar, Pional, Blood Orange, and DJDS, before finally giving in to the fan’s wishes with new single ‘Go To Hell’ last year. Coming up to the present, Empress Of has dropped two stunners in our lap - ‘In Dreams’ and ‘Trust Me Baby’. Both tracks are bilingual, with Rodriguez representing her Honduran roots in Spanish and American identity in English. Both tracks are converse in the universal language of music and love (or heartbreak, depending on your perspective). ‘Trust Me Baby’ is the first of her tracks to be co-produced by another, L.A. producer Cole MGN, perhaps an act of trust in itself. Over minimalist, bouncing and playful beats, with a romantic undertone of magnetised synth keys, Empress Of switches between Spanish and English in that angelic soprano of hers. It’s insatiable catchy, and whatever your first language may be, you’ll be sweetly singing along in no time. - Hannah Thacker
