EMPRESS OF GO TO HELL

A year on from the release of ‘Water Water’ and ‘Kitty Kat’, Empress Of is back with a stinging electronic-pop single called ‘Go To Hell’. It’s a blatant pass off to those who hate, judge, scrutinise and essentially can’t keep out of business that doesn’t concern them. Opening with a minimalist, sugar-sweet verse, she questions the opposers; “you love the sound of our own voice, is this conversation an interview?” For anyone who can relate to this feeling, you’ve found your anthem. With layers of hand-claps, vocal coos, a shuffling backbeat and bouncy electronics, Lorely Rodriguez stand her ground, “Everyone around me thinks I’m going to fail, but they can do to hell.” Co-written with Caroline Polachek (formerly of Chairlift) in a studio in L.A.’s Echo Park, ‘Go To Hell’ is a crisp, clarified syllable-by-syllable piece of synthetic pop that could very well be the shape of her upcoming, yet still untitled, second album. We can’t wait to find out. - HT
