Elly J Devon’s new track ‘Horizon’, provides a welcome reminder of the immense talent that exists and continues to flourish on the coastal peripheries of the UK. Hailing from Totnes on Devon’s quiet coastline, ‘Horizon’ is Elly J Devon’s first instalment of the Uncooked EP, performed and produced with the help of TMR favourites, Happyness. Written by Devon, ‘Horizon’ is a hauntingly soulful track filled with character and depth. Interceded with the occasional twanging guitar solo, ‘Horizon’ nods to a mirage of classic musical styles including soul, jazz, rock and blues. In spite of this, the lyrics and unbelievable vocal maturity of the classically trained 19-year-old, give the track a very modern feel. Inspired by the lyrical work of Kate Bush and Nina Simone, Devon admits her music looks to unpack “moments in life” and “find beauty” in them. The painful simplicity of lines such as ‘from a girl with a smile in her eyes; to one with a tear’ is a testament to Devon’s aim and a reflection that the simplest lyrics can often provide the most meaning.
