EARTHGANG FIELDS FT. MALIK

The Atlanta, Georgia hip-hop duo EARTHGANG have dropped their 14 track album Mirrorland, as promised. It simultaneously uses modern elements of hip-hop, and also feels classically rooted in the origins of jazz and R&B. The penultimate track on the album 'Fields ft. MALIK' is structured more like an electronic dance tune, whereby layers drop in and out, rather than their being set sections that repeat. The track is introduced by a deep and hard sub bass that bounces in your chest and thick snare. Jangly, affected guitars take the edge off the beat, residing somewhere in outer space. The rap is pronounced and high in the mix, pondering metaphysical thoughts - "Only in the present I no longer believe in time I don’t see my family half as much as I see the sky, knew this shit was coming I just chose not to read the signs." The layered R&B female backing vocals nourishingly drop in and out throughout the track, sometimes to be replaced by tuned up vocals. There's a bold fade-out that lasts over a minute, having the effect of the track fading off into the distance like a car would at the end of a movie. -Ellie Rose Davies
