LIST PICK
DUCKWRTH NOBODY FALLS (FEAT. KIANA LEDé, TERRACE MARTIN & MEDASIN)
‘Nobody Falls’ sidles up alongside previous List Pick ‘Love Is Like A Moshpit’ in Duckwrth’s brand new eight-track album, The Falling Man. This thematic trope of falling comes up at every turn throughout the album, including the suitably titled ‘Nobody Falls’, which relays the ways in which we avoid falling in love, avoid committing, avoid giving into emotions as a way to protect ourselves. These lustful lyrics vibe over booming beats in the first minute, but like these temporary situations, this state of being isn’t to last. We jump from spacey, robotic melodies to Frank Ocean-esque future-soul to beat-backed relentlessness. It almost sounds like three tracks were chopped up and stitched together, with help from Kiana Ledé, Terrace Martin and former collaborator Medasin. The piano-ballad outro adds yet another perspective to ‘Nobody Falls’, suggesting a more solemn take on this short-time-good-time approach to relationships. As ever, Duckwrth says it as he sees it. The Falling Man holds up a mirror to society and culture, so listen up. - Hannah Thacker
