DIZZY BACKSTROKE

Ontario four-piece Dizzy return with another dream-pop tune from their forthcoming album, Baby Teeth, out on August 17th. The image that comes to mind whilst listening to ‘Backstroke’ is that of a still lake, shining in the moonlight, the glassy surface only affected by the soft ripples of a lone swimmer. Solitude, quiet ringing in your ears, lonesome patience - these are the motifs interwoven into this minimalist arrangement of reverb-soaked guitars, atmospheric electronica, simple percussion, and swaying indie-pop melodies. From its sporadic opening, the tension of ‘Backstroke’ builds up as the narrative of unrequited love becomes more apparent. Towards the closing frame, singer and songwriter Katie Mushaw’s final admission. “I keep waiting for you”, is all that’s left. The promise is repeated, immersed in fizzing synths and theatrical guitar notes, which fade out, leaving the water in still calm once again. - Hannah Thacker
