Rising star Declan McKenna isn’t afraid to tackle the big political topics in his lyrics. In fact, he appears to revel in it. Introducing himself properly to the world with the Sepp Blatter/FIFA corruption-focused ‘Brazil’ in early 2015, he now returns with ‘Isombard’ - which dives into another political debate, with McKenna explaining that it’s… “basically about this right wing Fox News-type TV presenter trying to justify things like police brutality and xenophobia”. Aside from the undoubtable lyrical prowess on display; the way he presents his thoughts is wonderfully enjoyable, and completely endearing. Squiffy synths intertwine nicely with his energetic fret work, as Declan shows again that he is one of the most promising artists coming out of the UK right now. -JC
