DAUGHTERS OF REYKJAVIK SWEETS

Daughters of Reykjavik, also known as Reykjavíkurdætur, is an Icelandic hip-hop collective made up of nine members who kickstarted their careers by hosting a women's rap night. Soon, people were taking note of these women saying and doing whatever they wanted; being sexy, coarse, charming, perceptive and throughoughly initmadating the male-dominated rap scene. ‘Sweets’ is the group’s first release since their 2018’s album Shrimpcocktail, and as Steinunn from the DoR explains, "Sweets is a song about sex. Its working title was literally "The Sexy Song". It has four vocalists and all tell a different (naughty) story. In all the stories the woman is the initiator, she is in charge. Even though you can't understand every word you can feel the vibe. It's a song you put on to set the mood when your lover is coming over." It’s a paced 90s R&B meets contemporary hip-hop track built out of vibey beatwork and a mixture of Icelandic and Englsih lyrics. This collective is like no other, not only is their music bomb but they bring something truly unique to the world of hip-hop. Keep Daughters of Reykjavik close by as they’re heading towards the release of their second album, Soft Spot, in Spring 2020. - Hannah Thacker
