COLOURING WHITE WHALE

Doing their best to remain as un-Googleable as Jungle in the early days, London band Colouring release the immensely named ‘White Whale’. Naturally, images of Ishmael’s determined hunt for a particular leviathan in Herman Melville’s novel Moby Dick come to mind, and perhaps it’s an apt comparison to have. As lead vocalist and songwriter Jack Kenworthy explains “For the four of us, ‘White Whale’ is about the pursuit for some magic but also finding beauty in imperfection,” a meaning that possibly became more defined as the band came close to giving up on the track altogether. That was until producer (and drummer of The 1975) George Daniel came along with his harpoon-esque talents for harnessing a deep groove, crunchy percussion and alluring vocal gasps to “pull it over the finish line,” as Kenworthy puts in. Taken from their forthcoming sophomore EP, Heathen, ‘White Whale’ is a sonic creature worth seeking out. - HT
