Arriving through our speakerphones from the home of RnB excellence Canada comes the debut single from Montreal band Chiiild. In ‘Count Me Out’, the outfit takes a psychedelic and future-soul approach to the mainstay genre, evoking influences from D’Angelo to Tame Impala. Opening with a swell of warm, orchestral strings, the track drops into a laidback drumbeat, subtly warped vocals and reverby guitar riffs. Thanks to the lofi recording, the atmosphere is intimate and alive, and Chiiild even gives a human touch to the various electronic effects that gives rise to their self-proclaimed “synthetic soul” sound. This track is also our first taste of Chiild’s debut EP, out this Autumn via indie label Avant Garden, who also boast THEY., Emotional Oranges and Slenderbodies on their roster. - Hannah Thacker
