CHIDO MYA MUTUAL

Birmingham singer and songwriter Chido Mya cites her main influences as Nao, Mahalia and Jorja Smith, all three of which come through in the breezy pop-R'n'B song ‘Mutual’. Set against a minimalist backdrop of Nao-esque beats, Chido Mya speaks to her generation as they embark on their first forays and falls into love, with herself still being in secondary school and therefore writing about the experiences that surround her. Embedded in the deceptively refreshing songwriting here, the Birmingham schoolgirl stands her ground that any love in her life must be based on mutual respect, although she realises that it’s only through trial and error that we discover this. ‘Mutual’ isn’t connected to any project as yet, but like the early rises of Billie Eilish, Nilufer Yanya and the aforementioned Mahalia, we should keep an eye on this teen talent. - Hannah Thacker
