CAILIN RUSSO SEPTEMBER ROSE

There’s nothing quite like dysfunctional love to draw you in. Cailin Russo’s debut ‘September Rose’ does exactly that as a song “about a young love relationship happening and isn’t working because it’s not the right time,” as the 22-year-old Los Angeles newcomer further explains, “Roses don’t grow in September.” These profound thoughts are laced with minimalist, reverb-heavy guitars, downtempo drums, 1950s-era cinematic horns, and the unmissable addition of Russo’s rare jazz vocal. There’s old school jazz, hip-hop and soul influence in abundance here, but the varied song structure and contemporary production techniques of ‘September Rose’ makes this a fresh listening experience. It’s a strong debut from Cailin Russo - we’re excited for what the follow-up will have to offer. - HT
