BREVIN KIM SOMEBODY, SOME BODY

In the era of singles, it’s far too easy to be swept up in the three minute, thirty second fascination that dominates our streaming services and social media outlets. As proponents of the single, we’re part of this upward trend, and yet there’s something incomparably special about a collection of work. EPs in particular are an essential vehicle through which introductions to new artists and bands are made. That’s what we’ve found with Boston brothers Brevin Kim who have dropped their scorching new EP, titled cliff. As the duo themselves claim, they’re “blending basically every genre besides jazz and country!” on the EP. ‘hangover’ is a screeching bit of alt-rock, ‘pretty in pink’ is a more tender acoustic affair, and closing track the wedding!’ was produced by none other than Dylan Brady. Naturally, we’re honing in our spidey senses on one track - ‘Somebody, Some Body’. Instantly, this track is reminiscent of The Weeknd, yet with the cutting darkness that Brevin Kim delivers in each of their songs, drawing closer to the likes of breakout sensation YUNGBLUD. Snipping beats and cavernous bass give ‘Somebody, Some Body’ a dangerous and disconnected essence that ties directly into the empty search for physical contact that the pair artfully portray here. The pop-crossover songwriter style also gears this track up for more mainstream listening. No doubt, this won’t be the last we’re hearing of Brevin Kim. - Hannah Thacker
