South London's Black Bordello's fixation with the macabre has been one of the band's defining features since they surfaced. Blindingly apparent on their eerie new single 'Backache', vocalist and songwriter Sienna's mesmerising vocals turn from spookily seductive to inconsolable despair with less than a moments notice. Set over uncanny offbeat guitar strums and a subtly taunting bass line, the dynamic piece takes a wholly unexpected direction around the 4 minute mark, shifting gear from jazzy haunted house vibes to a spiky high-octane outro that we certainly didn't see coming. Arriving alongside a decadent video, steeped in bags of 18th century-inspired glamour and nostalgia, now's as good a time as any to immersive yourself in Black Bordello's strange and beguiling world. -Holly Mullineaux
