BENIN CITY BUS

London’s Benin City have announced their debut album, Last Night, due out June 15th via Moshi Moshi Records and along with this brilliant news, we have a new song - ‘Bus’. It celebrates that less glamorous, but nevertheless, essential part of an night out in the city, and that is of course the night bus. Anyone who has had the (dis)pleasure of journeying on a night bus, whether in London or another city, will know that as well as saving you a few quid, this form of transport is likely to attract a menagerie of people - drunk, sober, going home, going out, or just going around and around, there’s an equalising effect to be found as the wheels go round. On this particular London circuit, you’ll find Benin City’s vocalists Joshua Idehen and Shanaz Dorsett with multi-instrumentalist Tom Leaper. It’s a subtly bouncy and playful track, full of summery electronic beats and punchy drums, in which the vocalist’s contrasting styles convey the various feelings of a night out. So many of the lines can be interpreted with dual meaning, such as “you’ve got all of this place written all over your face” - perhaps you look downtrodden and defeated or perhaps you look alive with the chaos of it all; or perhaps something entirely different. Again, the other theme of “riding home” could be literal, but more likely, given this trio, their ride is heading towards the club, their spiritual home.
