AUGUSTINE GUTS

Augustine first showcased his single ‘Guts’ at Sweden’s coolest festival, Way Out West, with a roof-raising performance. For those of us who weren’t the lucky few at the festival, the young producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist has shared the track in full for your listening pleasure. Built on timeless pop instrumentation, Augustine sings in his signature falsetto of how you can feel terrible even when you’re privileged. As the Stockholm musician says, “‘Guts’ is about a hangover morning together with someone you adore and the irony of you both complaining about your mood when you were privileged enough to go out and have fun the night before. It’s a way of telling myself to shut up whenever I start feeling sorry for myself.” The sense of material comfort comes from the feel-good, disco-tipped rhythms that seems a odds to Augustine’s anxiety and life contemplation. It’s a sartorial, but nevertheless true to life look at these self-proclaimed “posh problems” set in the context of that earwormy piano loop. - Hannah Thacker
