The smooth R&B groove of ASHA is becoming a bit of a favourite here at TMR, after her recent tracks, the soulful ‘Chapters’ and stripped back 'We Can Do This', won us over. Her latest drop, ‘Record Straight’ is (aptly) more straight-up pop R&B – it’s uplifting, it’s dance floor worthy – but retains her characteristically self-empowering message. The bouncy girl-group style chorus and the shiny, grade-A production values are what hook you in, but it’s ASHA’s cool-as-hell London accent and girl-positive lyrics that give ‘Record Straight’ the edge, and what make her a definite one to watch in 2016. – EF
