ANNA MEREDITH INHALE EXHALE

Following up her 2016 debut Varmints at the end of the month with FIBS, experimental composer/producer Anna Meredith has shared her poppiest outing to date. Opening with a tumbling, 90s-inspired synth line that exists in a similar universe as Underworld's iconic 'Born Slippy (Nuxx)', 'Inhale Exhale' is an effervescent piece of electronica that builds around Meredith's surfacely serene vocals. Introducing a thudding kick around the 1 minute 40 mark, the track is elevated to a melancholy dance floor filler, accented by squelching Flaming Lips-esque synth bass. Giving insight on the lyrics Meredith explains, “'Inhale Exhale' is underpinned with lyrics exploring a more sinister and pessimistic take on what ‘living’ or having a ‘wild time’ might be for a cautious person like myself so despite the upbeat feel, the opening line which sets the mood is ‘you say you’re dancing in the deep end, but to me it looks like drowning'’’. FIBS comes out via Moshi Moshi on the 25th of October. -Holly Mullineaux
