ALGIERS CLEVELAND

New York/London experimental soul-punks Algiers are due to release the much anticipated follow up to their critically acclaimed self-titled debut LP next week. Excitement is building as the band share a powerfully raw new cut from The Underside of Power in the shape of police-brutality protest song 'Cleveland'. Taking its title from a sample of the gospel song ‘Peace Be Still’ by Reverend James Cleveland, 'Cleveland' is an emotional and politically charged combination of soul, gospel and erratic yet hardened experimentalism reminiscent of Death Grips. The Cleveland reference goes deeper than the writer of the sample as the song makes reference to Tamir Rice, the 12-year-old from Cleveland who was shot dead by police for playing with a toy gun in 2014. On 'Cleveland' Algiers' message is as powerful as the music they make. - HLMX
