ALESSANDRO CIMINATA SIGNS

From the outset of new single ‘Signs’, Alessandro Ciminata grips the listener with his deep, arresting vocals and mood-making bassline. The first verse unfolds a tender, melancholic narrative that speaks of memories, loss, love and bittersweet hope. We could interpret ‘Signs’ in many ways; the distance between two drifting lovers; a classic tale of unrequited love; a hopeless romantic nurturing heartbreak with the hope that their love will return. For the Ciminata however, it’s another source that sprung inspiration for this London-based songwriter. As he shares: “Last year I’ve lost my granddad, he’s been married to my nan for 60 years. I’ve always wondered what my nan felt, after losing him, when trying to fall asleep on the same bed they’ve shared for years.” With this context, the lyrics “In this bed I still feel for you now, / It’s like nothing had ever changed,” opens up with the expansive imagery of a widow reaching out across the half-empty bed for the person who had been there for so long. Soundtracked by intricate layers of indie electric guitars, unique percussion and pulsating synths, Ciminata’s nostalgic indie-pop is one that will stay with you long after the reverby poeticism has faded. We can’t wait for Alessandro Ciminata’s headline London show at The Waiting Room on October 22nd, with support from Matilda Eyre. Get your tickets here. - Hannah Thacker
