The opening to Kan Wakan’s ‘Phantasmagoria Pt. 1’ feels much more like a film than a conventional pop track. It therefore comes as no surprise that Kan Wakan is actually the artist project of composer Gueorgui Linev, an LA resident with a love for music in all its many forms. His ‘Phantasmagoria Pt. 1’ is utterly sublime, seamlessly weaving together Portishead-inspired vocals from Elle Olsun, rich orchestration played by The Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra and drums from Ian Chang (of ‘Son Lux’). Add to that a trumpet solo rivalled only by The Bees’s ‘I Love You’ and by the final flutter of the strings, you’ll feel right at home into Wakan’s soft musical landscape.
