HONORS OVER

Most of us can’t resist the pull of an anonymous project, but what’s even more tempting is a great debut track as heard in HONORS' gritty pop-trap song ‘Over’. It’s good to note that HONORS isn’t a total mystery. We do know that the outfit has four members, they’re from Toronto and this is the first release under this moniker, alluding to past works in some form or another. Aside from that, there isn’t an awful lot to know, so let’s turn our attention to ‘Over’. A metronome-type sound forms the steady opening, which is met with an equally rhythmic vocal, one that appears to either be one voice layered up or two voices in perfect sync. The whole song is clearly brooding over an extinguished love, with the chorus riding on a surge of bass, “You know I’m gonna change, things just don’t stay the same no more, no more; you know I’m going to break, you know I’m going to break your fading heart.” Later (around three minutes in), we’re treated to a swift half-rap delivered through a fuzzy effect, as though sung through a phone loudspeaker, begging “say it isn’t so.” It’s conflicting to say the least. However, what is consistent is the pulsating bass, slick trap etchings and smooth R&B vocal which all comes together in perfectly planned execution. - HT
