GIRLPOOL 1-2-3

Girlpool are LA duo Harmony Tividad and Cleo Tucker, who captured hearts with their minimal-but-mighty approach to songwriting on their 2015 album Before The World Was Big. The album barely featured more than three chords, yet each one of them direct, sincere and incredibly effective. The opening of ‘1-2-3’ follows on in this vein, with the duo's signature whispering vocals and minimal accompaniment. Around the one minute mark, however, the entire track repeats with a new backdrop of heavy fuzz guitar, loose drums and vocal harmonies. The effect marks a real departure for the duo, and a beautiful one at that, calling on influences including The Cranberries and the Cocteau Twins. The eye-catching video is directed by the band’s frequent collaborator Nick Rattigan, and is worth a watch for its unnerving depiction of Tucker bleeding lurid green paint. Catch Girlpool on their upcoming US tour, and watch out for Powerplant which is due to drop on May 12th via Anti-Records. -HM
