BONIFACE PHANTOM LIMBS

If you think back just four months ago to our introduction to new Canadian artist Boniface, you’ll recall the alternative, synth-pop melancholia and vengeance of debut ‘I Will Not Return As A Tourist’, alongside guitar-led b-side ‘Again & Again’. Already, Micah Visser had displayed a varying style, showing both explosive energy and restraint. Now, the multi-instrumentalist from Winnipeg steps up to the plate with what we can safely call a banger. ‘Phantom Limbs’ is a sweeping, dreamscape of disco undertones and indie anthem overtones. It’s a joyous combination of synths and drums, encouraging the listener to feel the beat… but when you’re not fist pumping or foot tapping or head bopping, give the lyrics a closer listen. “I wrote Phantom Limbs a few years ago when I was starting to become really unhappy with the way I was treating myself and the way my friends were treating themselves. I wrote it out of frustration without much redemption, and in the years since I’ve really tried to stop doing that. I think it's stuck with the band and I because it’s just really fun to play and we like that contrast.” Here, Visser wants you to listen, to reconnect, to bring yourself back into the world of the living. You can already imagine audience members bursting into movement at Boniface’s upcoming shows at SXSW (12th-16th March), Bermondsey Social Club, London (15th May) and The Great Escape (17th-19th May). - HT
