LIST PICK

BIRTHDAY PARADE

21-year-old Oakland native birthday first made an appearance seven months ago with nothing less than four debut songs - ‘Le Drugs’, ‘Babyface’, ‘Grown Up Kids’ and ‘Subtle Love’. His uplifting R&B pop was quickly picked up by the blogosphere and beyond, who were astonished not only by the quantity but the quality of this newcomer’s songwriting. Since then the talented ‘90s kid has moved to Los Angeles and has now completed his fifth and final song from his first EP. From the outset, ‘Parade’ whisks us away on cloud of breathy synths, regular taps and birthday’s heartfelt pop vocal. The suspended dreaminess is temporary though, as a high-hat focused beat gradually builds under the radar before bursting into an ecstatically speedy tempo. birthday’s loved-up state switches between swaying R&B and a modern take on garage beats revealing the unpredictable ways that longing for another can manifest itself. Stay tuned as you’ll have full access to his Subtle Love EP on December 2nd. - HT
