BELLATRIX STILL LOOKIN FOR

Hitting all the right spots with elements found in world music, dark pop and R&B, Londoner Bellatrix hits the ground running (or should that be dancing) with debut ‘Still Lookin For’. You probably won’t have heard anything like this, but if we had to compare it would probably be FKA Twigs' ‘In Time’ from last year’s M3LL155X EP. It’s by no means a direct comparison, as we can easily pick up on a plethora of styles like the tribal drum infused pop (Alyss), or the cutesy, yet confrontational, vocals (Hannah Diamond), or the urban commentary (Jorja Smith), or the drawn-out vocal inflections and experimental electronics (Bjork circa Vulnicura). Really the points of symmetry could go on, because Bellatrix, with the help of producer Exmoor Emperor, has put forward an ultimately contemporary sound; one that keeps you on your tones as you listen out for the next genre, social or cultural reference. - HT
